Winter 2022 Update:

Thank you for visiting Blackbirds Roost! It’s been a while since I have added anything to the website, so here’s what’s been happening:

  • First, I’m so proud of my little 1 year old baby. He’s the best and I’m trying to spend as much time with him. Diapers ain’t free and I have taken up a 3rd shift in the manufacturing field, yay 3 hours of sleep some days.
  • Second, I’m shopping for a new workspace. Duluth has changed and I’m waking up to the idea of stepping out and creating my own creative space, something I feel is needed with the constraints of my neurodiversity.
  • Lastly, I have been teaching a little here and there. This summer I taught a welding academy with Northwood Tech, just wrapped up a sewing class at North House Folk School, and have some small courses in the works in partnership with Duluth Maker Space. I’ll post a tour of the Maker Space when I get settled, very cool place.
  • Last last, I was a part of the 2022 cohort of the Creative Community Leadership Institute through Springboard for the Arts and Racing Magpie. I learned a lot and got a chance to reassess the focus of my work. More on that soon too.

Welcome!

Hi, I’m Amir and welcome to the roost – my little place to share my ideas, experiences, and experiments. I’ve been a park ranger, guide, and outfitter and now I’m using my experience to increase the representation of minorities by addressing the barriers that hold us back.

Among the many little bits here, lives Icterid Designs, a range of outdoor products driven by my enjoyment of the outdoors. At the core are simple products based on traditional techniques and an emphasis on accessibility, inclusion, and sustainability. I make everything in my little workspace in Duluth, Minnesota. Future plans include an adaptive alteration service as well as comprehensive gear repair and up/recycling.

All of my work is centered on self reliance and education, if you have any questions about my writing and work, please reach out using the form below, I love sharing what I can. Custom work, alteration, and repair inquiries are always welcome!

Thanks for visiting,

Amir
